This was the longest battle during WWII and it lasted from September 3, 1939 to May 8, 1945. It began when France and Great Britain declared war on Germany and was fought on the Atlantic Ocean. Allie ships, specifically American merchant ships and the ships sent to escort them, were attacked by German U-boats and fighting vessels.
