Sonni Ali was the first king of the Songhai empire in Western Africa, the last of the large kingdoms of sub-Saharan Africa. His leadership guided the miraculously rapid rise of this kingdom. Within his reign he captured and fortified myriad cities, even surpassing the height of the Mali empire despite having been the very first king of this kingdom.
