The Protestant Reformation was a period of time during which the Catholic church was split into multiple similar religions. In Germany, there was a revolt due to Martin Luther's "empowering of the priesthood of all believers" after the revolt, Lutheranism became the german state religion. There was also a reformation in Switzerland with the outcome being that Calvinism became the religion of many other states and was a force for 400 years.
