The Washington Naval Treaty was a treaty that was signed on February 6th 1922, by the major nations who emerged from WWI victorious. It prevented an arms race by limiting naval construction.
It came into effect on August 17th 1923 and ended December 31st 1936.
CAUSES & EFFECTS
CAUSE 1- The nations desire to prevent a 2nd war by limiting naval construction.
CAUSE 2- A desire to prevent an arms race.
EFFECT 1- WWII: when the treaty was modified a second time both Italy and Japan didn't sign it. A year later Germany declared that due to the Allies violation of the Versailles treaty it would no longer comply with the current treaty. When Hitler was elected he began construction on the necessary arms, unhindered.
EFFECT 2- In the wake of the 1st world war, many new Eastern Europe states struggled to find the armaments they needed such as warships and so had to look abroad.
