Texans rebelled after the president of Mexico, Santa Anna, became a dictator. Texans eventually won their independence in 1836. which led to some conflicts within the United States: "Those opposed to annexing Texas did not want another slave state in the Union." Since slavery was legal in Texas, the balance of free states and slave states would change, and so many northern Congressmen were opposed to adding Texas.
