It began when Texas gained independence from Mexico because America wanted more land from Mexico and they fought. This is important because they reached an agreement and then the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo was formed, and the US got California, Nevada, Texas, and Utah as well as parts of Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, and Wyoming.
