Theater was important and was the best way for a writer to make a living. Therefore most of the writers were playwrights (such as William Shakespeare) and their work were later on adapted into books etc.

Besides plays and their Drama (mostly tragedy), poems were the most important form of expressing oneself during the time. Poetry was the genre.

Famous authours and their works:

William Shakespeare (1564-1616): Drama/tragedies -Macbeth (first performed 1606), Othello (first performed 1604), Romeo and Juliet (first performed 1595). Drama/comedies - A Midsummer´s Night Dream (first performed 1605), Much Ado About Nothing (först performed 1612), Twelfth Night (first performed 1602) and many more.
