He criticized the church, because it emphasized external religion instead of internal piety

Christian Humanists' main goal was to reform the church, and they focused on sources of early Christianity, the Holy Scriptures, and the writings of church fathers. They discovered a "simple religion that had been been distorted by complicated theological arguments.
