Last monarch of Hawaii. Her brother, David Kalakaua was selected to be monarch after King Kamehameha died and ruled until 1891. Her brother signed the Bayonet Constitution. After her brother died she became queen, but it was short lived because a coup led by Sanford Dole- sugar and pineapple business economic interests. took over the Hawaiian government and pressed the US to annex the islands. She revoked the bayonet constitution and that caused the american settlers and US to back the coup because they wanted more control for economic gain.
