Bishop James J. Sweeney was one of the first 2 bishops of the Diocese of Honolulu. He was assigned to assist in the spiritual care of military troops in Hawaiʻi during World War II. Bishop Sweeney founded St. Stephen’s Seminary in 1946, in Kaneohe, Oʻahu. In 1957 he convened the first and only synod of the diocese. In 1966, Bishop Sweeney retired due to illness and later died in San Francisco in 1968 (Conrad, 1999, p. 379).
