Philip II prided himself on being the "most Catholic king." Under his rule, everyone in Spain was legally Catholic, but if people could tell someone wasn't practicing Catholicism, they could report them and then the inquisition could come. The Spanish Inquisition was used to help save people from eternal damnation by cleansing them of their sins or odd worshipping.
