In 80 AD the first naval battle at the Colosseum was held during the reign of Emperor Titus. The Naval battles were amazing to watch as the colosseum was flooded and dozens of special flat bottom boats would enter the arena with many men aboard fighting to recreate past Roman battles. Domitian organised a naumachia in 85 AD and yet another one in 89AD. Given the limited size of the Colosseum, the battles involved the use of stage-props and mechanisms to represent ships and simulate shipwrecks.
