Descrição:
The 20s were a time of change in Germany, it seemed as if they were moving on from the terror of WW1.
Theatre was used as a way to present issues in society both past and present. The views on life would make the audience question the current way of life.
Bauhaus architecture was a basic and modern style now used to show that Germany had changed from the elaborate pre-war architecture. It represented the workers having power, not the rich.
Was Germany moving on? Homosexuality and Transvestites was no longer taboo in some places (Berlin). People were more open to different opinions and were ready to make changes and move on.
Artists such as George Grosz and Otto Dix used there work to show what everyday life was like. They wanted to show how ordinary people were affected by both the war and the new way of life. They wanted people to see the people who had become disabled and poor but were ignored by the middle class as well as other issues in society, such as the rise of extremism.
Though there was a lot of tension under the surface with all the political instability. Much of rural Germany was still caught up in the past and by the 1930s, the Nazi party was controlling freedom of though, expression and speech.
