Aboriginal Land Right Act: Cause: The Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders' land was taken over by the British and they took land away from the First Nations Peoples Communities.
Perspective: First Nations People were not happy about the British colonising their land without their promision. Now, about 50% of the Northern Territory is owned by First Nations Communities.
Effect: The First Nations People protested, strikes and petitions. Finally, after 9 years, the campaigning had gone around the country and in December 1976, the federal government past the Aboriginal Land Rights Act.
1967 Referendum: Cause: The Aboriginal people were not counted as real Australians so they could not vote in anything.
Effect: The Holt Government introduced the idea for this and finally after all of Australia voted, the results came and showed that 94% voted yes to the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders being counted in the census.
Perspective: Some Aboriginals were happy to be counted in the census so they could be counted as 'real' Australians according to the Government although they already where real Australians. Although, some First Nations People didn't want to be counted in the census.
The Right to Vote: Cause: Queensland Aboriginals were unavailable to vote since the late 1800's. Most Aboriginal people were declared 'wards of the state', meaning they couldn't vote.
Effect: This act gave the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people the option to enroll and vote in federal elections, although enrolment was not compulsory. Shortly after this, Western Australia and Northern Territory gave Aboriginal people the right to vote in the state elections. The act was passed in 1965.
Perspective: The First Nations People wanted to have an equal say in what as going on. Although, some First Nations People didn't want to vote and that is because the felt forced into. So, the government made it optional.
Aboriginal Tent Embassy: Cause: The Governments laws were unfair toward the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders.
Effect: 4 Aboriginal men set up a tent opposite the (Old) parliament house to take a stand against the land laws.
Perspective: The tent embassy still exists today but protesters have set new goals to now include Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander 'sovereignty' and 'self-determination.'
Períodos
Stolen Generation: Cause: The European people thought they were more superior than the first nations people because Aboriginals were seen as hunters and gatherors and uncivilised people because they didn't have buildings, houses and shops. They were see as people who couldn't take care of people.
Perspective: After many years, the government finally apologized to the Stolen Generation. The Aborignal owners of the family might of never met their child ever and never got to watch them grow up.
Effect: The European people took the Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and took them to homes for boys and girls. But few would actually get an education.
