The beginning of the
slave revolt is due to a
rumour occurring that
the freedom given to
those France could also be
applied to slaves, letting
them now become free
citizens, many slaves
decided to revolt against
their owners who denied
knowledge of this. This
caused 1000 plantations
and 100 white men to be
killed.Slavery was abolished by
France if they joined the fight
against counter-revolutionaries.
This let Toussaint-L'Ouverture
join the french Army to fight
the Spanish and the British.Toussaint-L'Ouverture, now the
self elected ruler of the island,
issued a Constitution. Included
was autonomy, no slavery and
establishment of him as governor.Toussaint-L'Ouverture was arrested
by Charles Leclerc.Toussaint-L'Ouverture died
in prison in France.After trying to fight for Haiti
back, French soldiers were
forced to surrender due to
weapons and disease.The colony became the
first black republic under
the name Haiti.Toussaint-L'Ouverture control of

Spanish to retreat, this freed slaves
