Missouri Compromise. It named Maine as a free state and Missouri as a slave state. All states above Missouri's southern boarder except Missouri will be free states.
Nullification Crisis. It ensued after South Carolina's declaration that the the federal tarriffs of 1828 unconstitutional and therefore null and void.
Compromise of 1850. 5 laws that dealt with Slavery. D.C no longer had a legal slave trade. California joined the Union as a free state. Created the Utah territory.
Georgia Platform to the compromise of 1850. Qualified support for the Union as long as the federal government didn't restrict slave laws.
Kansas-Nebraska Act. Settlers and entrepreneurs wanted to move into Kansas, but since the land was only a territory they could not hold land legally. The act allowed all new territories to chose if they wanted slavery. (Popular Sovereignty)
Dredd Scott Decision. Dredd Scott had come to a free state with his master for several years. When he went back to the south he sued his owner because he said he was now a free man because he lived in a free state. The court ruled that even though slaves were citizens they could not sue so he could not press charges.
Election of 1860. Democrats had a big split northern Democrats wanted Stephen Douglas as the nominee. Southern Democrats wanted John C. Breckenridge. Republicans Chose Abraham Lincoln. Abraham Lincoln won the election.
