Edgar Allan Poe is born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, Massachusetts.
Both of Edgar's parents have both either died or left at this point. A couple in Richmond, John Allan and Frances Allan, take Edgar as a foster child.
Edgar goes to the University of Virginia in 1826, but drops out just 8 months later because he had heavy gambling debts.
Poe marries his 13-year-old cousin, Virginia Clemm.
Poe publishes his first full-length fiction work, Arthur Gordon Pym.
Poe and his wife move to New York City.
Poe publishes his famous poem, "The Raven." It was a great success.
Poe's wife, Virginia, dies, making Poe's problems with alcohol and drug abuse worse.
Poe goes to Richmond and gets engaged to another woman.
Before the wedding, however, Poe dies suddenly. He was drinking at a party, then found in a gutter 3 days later. He is rushed to the hospital, but he dies on October 7, 1849.
John Allan dies.
Frances Allan dies.
Edgar's first known poem is made.
The Murders in the Rue Morgue, which is known as the first modern detective story, is published in a magazine.
Poe and the Allans sail for England, where Edgar enrolls in school.
Poe and the Allans move back to Richmond, Virginia.
