Identity - The Celts Settled
Romans Identity- The Romans conquered the Celtic region. A large army came. Not a residential city or a civic community. They had a large civilian population.
Romans Relationships- mostly soldiers settled near the Rhine. They settled there because they could easily protect the villagers that had settled there. This was a Hamlet settlement because a hamlet consists of usually 100 people and when the Romans found Basel they only bought a few people.
Romans of Augusta Raurica. Identities- Over 15.000 inhabitants.
Romans of Augst Raurica Relationships - Humans began to settle.
Relationships - Humans began to build roads and country houses. They founded other such as towns. They took over Augusta Raurica - 44 B.C.E. The settlement was called Colonia which was a systematic settlement that the Romans used outside of Rome. It was an urban settlement and a bunch of other places including confluence of two streams. Physical- They came because of the strategic hills, rivers and physical features. They also developed a metropolitan region.
Dark Ages Identity- 4th Century-Christianitisation began lead by the first Bishop named Lustinianus Rauricorum. 5th Century- The Alamanni entered the region. 6th Century- The Frankish rule in the region began. 763-836th century- Haito was the first Bishop.
Dark Ages- Relationships- 4th Century- Basel was a minor apendage of Augst. 5th Century- The population was intermingled through the region while the Rhine marked the border between two empires. 8th Century- a Bishop decided to move from Augst to Basel and that was when the city came alive. 763-836th Century- Basel had a bunch of different of settlements. The town was made up of less closely connected epicenters. Houses and homesteads were now owned by families.
Middle Ages Identity- The bishops still led Basel. Basel became separated into Kleinbasel and Grossbasel. An exterior wall was also built in effort to help reconstruct Basel after the tragic occurrence of the earthquake. The same time as the earthquake the plague went through the city and killed a large part of the population. The earthquake lead to reconstructing the city and leveled out the city. During the 14th to 15th century, the power of the city left the church and moved to civil administration.
Middle Ages Relationships- A new medieval wall was discovered and Basel began to expand was an exterior wall was built and an interior wall which ran through Basel. Basel was a town and had house developments that were well used by families. The Rhine bordered two separate empires. Many building and other places were added such and the monastery,Market place, Squares, metro Basel and urban construction changed as well. The medical town was also created and the city remained standing until the 19th centurty
Middle Ages Identity-During the 14th to 15th century, the power of the city left the church and moved to civil administration. The earthquake was the worst in Europe known for many years. Another thing that the earthquake occurred was the subsequent fire that also Basel destroyed large parts of Basel.
19th century- Identity- The century was the beginning of a generic city. The Maring plan was very little realized. Barracks were built on the Rhine according to the building plans of Ludwig Maring .
18-19th Century- Relationships- in 1897 Ludwig Maring has a plan for Basel to help put circulaer expansion around the medival middle of the city.
