Greek Mythological Myths
and legends have the idea
of robots. Especially seen
with Hesphaestus, the son of Zeus
and blacksmith of the god. He
would often make machines.
Machines in Greek Mythology can
also be observed through Pygmallion
who created talking statues.Ancient Egyptians create the idea of robots.
They knew them as "Thinking Machines," in
reality these machines weren't intelligent but
rather priests hid in them and spoke inside a
statue. Whilst this was fake, it did raise the
notion of man creating inanimate objects which
can act and think for themselves.Ancient Babylonians create
the water clock, which is thought
to be one of the first ever
automations created by man.
It was used to calculate how
much time has passed.Chinese Engineer and Inventor King-Shu Tse creates
a mechanical bird and a mechanical horse.
Whilst this technically wasn't a robot as it required
human control, however it was an early step towards
creating what we know today as robots.Liang Lingzan, a Chinese engineer,
and Buddhist monk Yi Xing(who was also an engineer)
create the first mechanical clock. This is though to have
been the one of the earliest independent
automation, made in human
history.Netherland's create automated carillons, a carillon.
carillons are designed to create a bell like sound that
by using an automated system, human workers are not needed.
This is a significant step into wide-scale automations.Leonardo da Vinci creates his "artificial man" which is
considered to be one of the first humanoid robots, ever
created.
The robot knight could stand, sit, lift its visor, and move its arms independently,
and it featured an anatomically perfect jaw.Nikola Tesla, who previously created
the first alternating current motor, creates
the first remote-control object. It was a
small box that was able to move around and
used radio waves to control its movement.
This was a breakthrough as it was one of the
first accounts of creating electric devices
that can be controlled by a human remotely.William Pollard creates a
programmable robot which is able
to spray paint, objects and be used in
a commercial sector. This was significant
as it as one of the first commercial robots
created and widened the demand for robots
to be used on a commercial level.
Furthermore it was one of the first robots that could
operate of a pre programmed chip and didn't
require manual human control for it to run,Isaac Asimov creates his Three Laws of Robotics which
provide guidelines into creating a sustainable future
with robots, in which robots and humans can co exist.
The three laws of robotics are centred around prioritising humanity
over artificial beings.Massachusetts Institute of Technology opens
the worlds first artificial intelligence lab, which
is focussed on creating artificial intelligence that
can think for itself and constantly improve, aligned
with Asimov's third law.The Mobile Robots Group at MIT created a robot named Genghis.
Genghis was a six legged insect which was able to walk by itself
without any human interference.Sony releases Aibo a robot dog which can respond to
preprogrammed sounds. This was significant as it was
one of the earliest consumer robot, it also proved that
there was a market demand for robots and that many
people found fun and fascinating.Honda released Asimo a bipedal humanoid bar tender.
Asimo was later developed and updated in 2011. Asimov
synthesises its cutting edge camera technology and
merges it with Artificial Intelligence for it to talk
and perform simple tasks. Asimo provided the public
with a stereotypical image of a robot which is bipedal and
humanoid.Waymo raises a further 2.5 billion dollars for their self driving car project.
- Waymo is a subsidiaries of Alphabet the company which owns and runs Google
- Waymo aims to make the roads a safer place and has identified that 94% of road
accidents is due to human error or human malpractice. Waymo believes that
self driving cars will be able to drive better than humans and doesn't even have
options for human overide in its system.Toyota creates a violin playing robot, this is harder than tit sounds as
it required fine coordination from the robot to be able to play well and
accurate.
THE 2010s WOULD GO ON TO BE A PERIOD OF GREAT ROBOTIC DEVELOPMENTIn 2021: 90% of all modern robots are found in factories.
The development of robots is mainly seen in a factory context
as there is the most commercial drive in this area to push the development of robots.
