Occupation of Alcatraz Island- led by the Native American group, Indians of All Tribes, or IAT, Native Americans took over and held Alcatraz Island as Indian Land. AIM was later involved (Nov 20, 1969 - Jun 11, 1971)
the "Trail of Broken Treaties" march on Washington, D.C- app. 1,000 angry Native Americans seized files from the Bureau of Indian Affairs, or BIA, offices causing >$2 mil in damages.The Nixon administration provided $66,000 in transportation monies in return for a peaceful end to the takeover and agreed to appoint a NA to a BIA post. occupation of Wounded Knee, South Dakota- 200 members of local Oglala Lakota Indians, led by AIM members, seized the village of Wounded Knee declaring it to be an independent nation with a single demand of the return of the Great Sioux Nation allegedly promised to them by the United States in the Fort Laramie Treaty of 1868.
the Pine Ridge shootout- two undercover FBI agents chased a pickup truck into an area near an AIM encampment. During the shootout, the two FBI Agents and one Indian activist were killed. >300 FBI agents swarmed making dozens of arrests and prosecutions. Ultimately, AIM activist Leonard Peltier received two life sentences for his role in the FBI killings
