12 April 1945, Harry S. Truman became president of the United States. He was Vice President of Franklin D. Roosevelt before he died of a stroke in early 1945.
In February 1945, the Yalta conference was held. Roosevelt, Stalin and Churchill attended this conference to talk about the future of Germany as a country. At this point, the war was not over.
In July 1945, the Potsdam conference was held. Truman, Stalin and Attlee attended this conference to further talk about Germany. At this point, the war was over.
In March of 1946, Churchill delivered a speech in Fulton USA and described the power in Eastern Europe as an Iron Curtain. The Iron Curtain was not a tangible 'curtain' but it almost separated Europe.
In March 1947, Harry S. Truman announced the Truman Doctrine. This was a set of ideals that would guide American diplomacy for the next 40 years.
In January of 1947, Harry S. Truman appointed George Marshall to scout Europe to find out how people were living. He came back and announced it was terrible which led to the creation of the Marshall Plan. This was a document the leaders signed to offer economical aid to the few non-communist countries in Europe.
From mid-1948 until 1949, the Soviet Union blocked off all contact with the Western Allies. This was known as the Berlin Blockade.
Joseph Stalin, the leader of the communist party, died. Later this month, Nikita Khrushchev rose to power as the new communist leader.
Dwight D. Eisenhower, a republican, ran for President and won by a landslide victory.
Fidel Castro, a communist, seized power in Cuba and aligned himself with the Soviet Union.
Khrushchev set up the Warsaw Pact. This was an Alliance of communist countries or countries allied with the Soviet Union. They pledged to attack any country that tries to invade the Soviet Union.
The Hungarian Revolution. The Soviet Union invaded Hungary as it's new leader tries to leave the Warsaw Pact.
The U2 incident. A US spy plane was shot down flying over Soviet Airspace.
John F. Kennedy becomes the 35th President of the United States.
The Vienna Summit. John F. Kennedy and Nikita Khrushchev met for a meeting. It was held in the Austrian capital of Vienna.
Khrushchev began building the Berlin Wall which separated the West of Berlin from the East of Berlin. The East was still under Soviet power.
The US planned to attack the Cuban area of the 'Bay of Pigs' after a spy plane received intel that there was Soviet missile bases in Cuba. This was a warning to Cuban government that the US did not want to start a nuclear war.

Mikhail Gorbachev becomes the President of the Soviet Union.
