1887 Thomas Edison invents the Phonograph. The phonograph was the earliest recording medium invented. It used a wax cylinder to record sounds. This leads to the magnetic recordings and audio recording.
1898 Valdemar Poulsen invents magnetic recordings using magnetized steel tape as a recording medium. This helps lead to audio recordings.
THE START OF THE 20th CENTURY
1887 Edward Muybridge invents high speed photography. This leads to the motion-picture industries.
1934 Joseph Begun invents the first tape recorder. It recorded audio and was used for broadcasting.
1901 Guglielmo Marconi transmits the first radio signals from Cornwall to Newfoundland. This leads to radio broadcasting and the tape recorder.
1894 Louis Lumiere invents the cinematograph. This was an early device that projected images on to walls.
1923 The iconoscope was invented by Vladimir Kosma Zworykin. This tube was used in the first television camera. This lead to the cathode ray tube used in later televisions, the same tubes used in discovering the electrons in atoms.

1938 Orson Welles reads the War of the Worlds on a live broadcast. This caused mass panic in the US as listeners believed the world was actually being invaded by aliens. This caused regulations to be placed on broadcasting and eventually the FCC.
1951 Ampex developed the first practical video tape recorder. This caused more practical use of video tape recorders in the US.
1956 Apmex, once again, has an impact on the world of video recording and the video tape is introduced to coincide with the aforementioned video tape recorders.
1960 The first presidential debate was broadcast. It was Kennedy against Nixon and it was broadcast on live television. This allowed people to watch the debates instead of listening or reading.
1963 The assassinations of both JFK and MLK stunned the nation as mass media coverage flooded news broadcasts and television channels. The assassination of JFK was caught on live television as he was shot in Dallas, TX.
1948 Transistors are invented, enabling the miniaturization of technology. This led to technology such as processors and computer chips.
1969 Arpanet is started by the US government. This was the beginning of the internet we know today.
1971 Microprocessors are invented, enabling further miniaturization of technology in machines such as early computers.
1978 Surround sound becomes a popular sound system in theaters thanks to innovations such as better sound recording mediums.
1984 The IBM personal computer (PC) released. This allows people to have access to the internet at the time, although very limited. This wouldn't be possible without the microprocessors and transistors.
1988 Compact Discs, or CD's, surpass LP records in sales. This was caused by the huge popularity and ease of use of CD's. Those CD's wouldn't be possible without the use of CD players that read the CD's with lasers.
1994 The US government releases control of Arpanet and this births one of the biggest changes to the world: the World Wide Web.
