A large number of Sikhs, led by Sant Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale, occupy the Harmandir Sahib (Golden Temple) at Amritsar, the Sikhs’ holiest shrine. This heightens tensions considerably because the threat of danger is now getting closer and closer.
Gandhi orders the Indian army to attack and oust the separatists from the Golden Temple. This is known as Operation Bluestar. Some buildings in the shrine were badly damaged in the fighting, and at least 450 Sikhs were killed.
