Portugal captured Malacca and named Afonso de Albuquerque as governor. They held control until 1641 when the Dutch defeated them, thus taking control.
The Portuguese captured the island of Goa, making it a major military and commercial base.
The Portuguese established a settlement in Macao, and used the port as a base for trade and communication with China
Portuguese founded Colonia del Sacramento (Uruguay) for smuggling contraband into Argentina
Vasco da Gama reached India and established the first Portuguese outposts. Portugal became the center of the commerce with the East.
Portuguese took over administration of Kongo. About 200 Portuguese were residing in the Kongo capital, Sao Salvador. Portuguese people and Bakongo people would come to government positions.

War was erupted in Angola. The Swahili revolted against the Portuguese on the East Coast. African rebellions also caused a dramati c decline in the Portuguese slave trade.
