Spring 1648- Parliament refused to approve the government's revenue. They were trying to limit the monarchy's (Louis XIV) power by establishing Parliament's power to discuss and modify royal decrees. This set off the first phase of the Fronde (the Fronde of the Parliament).
August 1648- Parisian people rise up and barricade the streets in response to the arrest of several Parliament members. In response to the refusalof Parliament to approve the government's revenue, Cardinal Mazarin (Anne of Austria's advisor) arrested two of the outspoken Parliament members, notably Pierre Broussel. The Parisian people took to the streets to protest this, and the arrested members of Parliament were released.
The end of Thirty Years' War and Peace of Westphalia was signed. This freed the royal army to take action against the Fronde.
