1312 - Mansa Musa came into power. Ruling for twenty-five years, he expanded the empire and sought peace and stability. Everyone began practicing Islam, though he chose some laws to not follow.
1217 - Sundiata is the first king of Mali
1352 - Beginning of the Fourteenth Century, Ibn Battuta travels to great Mosque of Djenne. Camels follow carrying large slabs of salt (known as salt caravan; salt was a good later traded for gold).
1324 - Mansa Musa's voyages to Mecca. His 5,000 slaves caravaning, carrying five pounds of gold each.
1350 - Timbuktu becomes major education center
1510 - Spain makes first permanent European settlement (today's Columbia)
1513 - Vasco Núñez de Balboa and conquistadors begin colonizing Carribean islands in areas of South America, using rival native tribes against each other
