The Native Land Act (1) The Native Land Act allocated just 7% of all agricultural land in South Africa to blacks. The rest of the land was reserved for whites. In addition, Africans were forbidden to buy or lease their land to white people, and vice versa. The Act also banned sharecropping, which had a devastating consequence.
Native (Urban Areas) Act is passed (2) The Native (Urban Areas) Act further segregated urban areas and made access to cities for blacks much harder.
The Afrikaner National Party gains rapid momentum (3) The Afrikaner National Party (NP) gained momentum during the 1930s and was in opposition with the African National Congress (ANC).
The term 'apartheid' comes into prominence (4) The term 'apartheid' came into prominence during the 1948 general elections, and was used as the slogan for the Afrikaner National Party. Apartheid is Afrikaans for 'separateness' or 'apart-hood'. It was used to define the separation of blacks from whites in South Africa and displayed racist connotations as blacks were seen as inferior people.
