1890: Massacre at Wounded Knee. lost major hostilities between Native Americans and US Army, resulting in the slaughter of over a hundred unarmed Indians.
1898: Spanish-American War: US takes on Spain following the destruction of The USS Maine in the harbor of Havana, Cuba, blamed on Spanish terrorists. Theodore Roosevelt becomes a war hero at the battle of San Juan Heights. Comomdore Dewey defeats a Spanish fleet in the Phillippines.
1901: William McKinley assassinated. Theodore Roosevelt, champion of progressive causes, becomes president.
Franz Ferdinand, archduke of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire is murdered. Within weeks, Europe is at war: Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire fight against France, Russia, and the United Kingdom + their allies. World War I has begun.
August: The German thrust into France is halted. Trenches are dug, machine guns have changed the face of war. Stalemate will rule on the western front until 1918.
1915: Ocean line Lusitania sunk by German boat. American passengers die; Americans outraged.
1917: The Zimmerman Telegram: German asks Mexico to war against the US if the US ever enters WWI. President Wilson intercepted this and used it as a cause for war. America enters the fight.
1918: Treaty of Brest-Litovsk: Russian Monarchy overthrown by communist rebels. Rebels withdraw from the war and make peace with Germany.
1918: Meuse-Argonne offensive: last major action of the war where fresh American troops and material enable the allies to push German forces back.
Treaty of Versailles: ended first world war, redrew the map of Europe, blamed Germany for the war.
