1885- King Leopold appoints himself as the leader of the Congo Free State
1908- The country of Belgium annexed the Congo after protests over King Leopold’s murderous control over the Congo.
1959- Belgium loses control over the Congo as there is an increase in protests for independence.
1960- The Congo gained independence, renamed as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, headed by Joseph Kasavubu as President.
12th Century- The landscape of Africa consisted of many different clans and kinship groups, ruled by chiefs in small villages
13-14th Centuries- Villages condensed to form states, and one of these states was called the Kingdom of Congo which was overall ruled by a King.
15th/16th Centuries- British, Portuguese, and Dutch engage in slave trade through Kongo intermediaries.
1874-1887- King Leopold of Belgium commissions Henry Stanley to explore the Congo. At the Conference of Berlin, European powers recognize King Leopold’s claim to the Congo Basin.
1887- 1908- King Leopold rules the Congo, enslaving the native African people and profiting off of the natural resources
