British, Portuguese, and Dutch engage in slave trade through Kongo intermediaries.1885- King Leopold appoints himself as the leader of the Congo Free State1908- The country of Belgium annexed the Congo after protests over King Leopold’s murderous control over the Congo.1959- Belgium loses control over the Congo as there is an increase in protests for independence.1960- The Congo gained independence, renamed as the Democratic Republic of the Congo, headed by Joseph Kasavubu as President.12th Century- The landscape of Africa consisted of many different clans and kinship groups, ruled by chiefs in small villages13-14th Centuries- Villages condensed to form states, and one of these states was called the Kingdom of Congo which was overall ruled by a King.15th/16th Centuries- British, Portuguese, and Dutch engage in slave trade through Kongo intermediaries.1874-1887- King Leopold of Belgium commissions Henry Stanley to explore the Congo.
