The first known Portuguese settlers arrived in
newly established Brazil bringing need slaves
from Africa to work on new sugar mills.Portuguese royal family flees to Brazil after the
invasion of Portugal by Napoleon and eventually
return home after 14 years when Napoleon was
defeated, i the process they left behind their son
Pedro to rule Brazil.Pedro Alvarez Cabral, who is a Portuguese
admiral, officially discovers Brazil, and formally
claims Brazil for the crown of Portugal.The claim of the area of Brazil by Portugal was
made by Alexander VI by the treaty of
Tordesillas which split the Americas on the
longitude line of 46º 30' W between the Spanish
and Portuguese claims.The Portuguese crown made the first effort to
establish a government in Brazil, they divided
the colony into 15 hereditary fiefs, each
occupying about 160 miles along the coast.Street protests were started by a slight rise in

Portugal and established the Braganza dynasty,
and Pedro became the constitutional emperor
of Brazil and changed his name to Pedro I.The very first Constitution of Brazil was written
during the rule of Pedro I, but years later he was
forced to abdicate this power because of a
military revolt, so he passed down his power to
his 5 year old son Pedro IIPortuguese occupied the port of Bahia, and the
independence army with 8000 men repeatedly
failed to take the seaport, and each side only
suffered 100 casualties.Pedro I appoints British admiral Thomas
Cochrane to take command of the Brazilian fleet,
and eventually defeated the Portuguese at Bahia
by luring them away to the smaller town of
Maranhão and surprise attacking them. Then
they chased the Portuguese down while they
were fleeing back to Portugal.A couple anarchists had tried to revolt the new
Brazilian regime but it was immediately crushed
by Cochrane. For example, in Pernambuco, 16
secessionist ringleaders where executed.New
