1831-The first institute was opened in Brantford in Canada. At first they only admitted boys but in 1834 they admitted girls
1867-BNA act made aboriginals a federal responsibility as was education
1883-Sir John A MacDonald authorized creation on west based schools
1884-Canadian government banned traditional indigenous ceremonies
1896-45 residential schools open, every student who came provided the school with an allowance which led to overcrowding and an increase in disease within the institutions
1920-Superintendent Duncan Campbell Scott made attendance mandatory for aboriginal children between 7 and 16 years old
1923-They had 80 to 90 schools with an enrollment of over 17000
1960-As residential schools closed thousands of children were taken by social workers and placed in adoption or foster homes with people who are non indigenous families some were even placed out of Canada
1966-Chanie Wenjack's coroners inquest was held
1979-12 Residential schools still running they planned to be more culturally aware of the aboriginal students
1996-The last federally run facility was closed in Saskatchewan
