Federal Bureau of Investigation (1908) Was set up in 1908, when some Department of Justice (DOJ) investigators were hired as special agents. The agency was formally named in 1909.
Community Policing Era (1980’s) Was designed to counter increased technological advance, specialization and paramilitarization, and restore the relationship the police had with the citizenry it was sworn to serve and protect.
President’s Commission on Law Enforcement and Administration of Justice (1967) Was partially responsible for Congress' passing of the Omnibus Crime Control and Safe Streets Act of 1968. This act established the Law Enforcement Assistance Administration (LEAA) and appropriated a billion dollars each year to improve and enhance criminal justice agencies.
Slave patrols (17th and 18th Century) Members of the slave patrols were free white males, and while the requirements differed across time, and the requirements differed from place to place, members of patrols were 10 people who were exempted from the militia in South Carolina.
Political Era (Late 18th Century) Even while there was technological advancement in policing across the nation, politics remained extremely important to policing.
First Warden (1749) The warden was permitted to hire as many watchmen as necessary, the powers of watchmen expanded, and the city would pay select people, from taxes.
Era of Social Upheaval (1960 and 70’s) Crime rates doubled from 100,000 people, the civil rights movement started, and antiwar sentiment and urban riots forced police into the center of the maelstrom.46 Police began to see their historical role and the minority communities they had always policed questioned.
Night watch/day watch systems (1700’s) Begins with early settlers, coming to America from England. This meant able-bodied men would be called upon to spend their time to assist in keeping the cities safer.
Homeland Security Era (2001-Present) This era began after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This was the beginning of a new era of policing.
Wickersham Commission (1931) A commission was established to examine rising crime, and that caused police to be directed away from the service role, to become law enforcement officers while looking to decrease crime.
First motor patrol (1903) Was implemented in Boston, also with a Stanley Steamer automobile, and the chauffeur was a civilian, to drive the car as police officers would sit on a raised seat in the back of the vehicle, and look down over high backyard fences.
Reform Era (Late 1800’s and Early 1900’s) Entailed radical reorganization, with strong centralized administrative bureaucracies, specialized units, and significantly larger numbers of officers.
