29 dez 1897 ano - The War of 1898 - Spanish/American War
Descrição:
What was it: This war was a conflict between Spain and the U.S. which was rather short, lasting around 4 months and taking place at two main locations: Cuba and The Philippines.
Background Causes:
Cuba wanted to become independent from the harsh rule of Spain, and the U.S. wanted to help them, but most importantly, wanted to protect their economic and political influence over Cuba. The U.S. had heavily invested in Cuba, and were trading with them even more so than Spain.
Certain U.S. newspapers started to publish and share news exaggerating the atrocities of Spain against Cuba, causing major conflicts and stirring people’s anger; a style of journalism that became known as yellow journalism.
The U.S. battleship Maine exploded as well in Havana harbor, killing over 200 sailors; even though the cause was never determined, the Americans blamed Spain.
The U.S. was also after expansionism, specially in locations near the Pacific.
Defeat of Spain at The Philippines: The U.S. navy attacked the Spanish fleet at Manila Bay, and they were able to defeat them quite easily without losing any U.S. ship. However, they didn’t have any ground force to take over the land. This is where Emilio Aguinaldo stepped in; he was a key nationalist leader of the Philippines, and he declared its independence in the same year. He decided to support the U.S. forces against Spain. With Aguinaldo’s help, the U.S. was able to enter Manila and defeat the Spanish Army.
Defeat of Spain at Cuba: The U.S. defeated Spain several times both at ground and at sea.
Armistice: The U.S. and Spain signed an Armistice to end the war.
Treaty of Paris: They also signed a Treaty of Paris which enabled the following:
Cuba became independent but under U.S. influence.
Puerto Rico and Guam were annexed to the U.S.
Spain sold The Philippines to the U.S. for $20 million dollars.
