Dido and Aeneas was composed by Henry Purcell in 1689. The piece includes violas, violins, cellos, basses, oboes, recorders, harpsichord, trumpets, and voice. The piece starts off melancholic and gentle to illustrate elegance and emotional depth. The mood of Dido and Aeneas is emotional and vulnerable with moments of sorrow and majesty. By 1689, Henry Purcell was one of England’s most prominent composers with his church and theater works. He was appointed as the organist of Westminster Abbey during the Baroque Era. Dido and Aeneas is in the tragédie lyrique genre which is influenced by French operas but with English vocals. This opera was composed for Josias Priest’s boarding school for young gentlewomen (Harris). The piece tells a tragic story about Dido, the Queen of Carthage and her unfortunate love for the Trojan prince named Aeneas. The story is based on Virgil’s Aeneid, where Aeneas left Carthage to Rome which broke his vow to marry Dido (“Dido and Aeneas”). Just like many pieces during the Baroque Era, Dido and Aeneas is set in triple meter and quadruple meter. The dynamics in the piece are subtle but are still expressive and reflective. The tempo is slow during reflective moments, moderate for dialogues, and fast for celebratory moments. The structure of the opera alternates between recitative and solo songs that are accompanied by an orchestra.
