His character challenges American ideals of hard work and success by showing the consequences of a system that values productivity over human well-being. Statements like, "I resolved to assign Bartleby a corner by the folding-doors, but on my side of them, so as to have this quiet man within easy call, in case any trifling thing was to be done"(Melville, 1137). Showing that if you prove you can work hard you end up being the go to person for anything that might need to be attended to. This critique encourages readers to reflect on the importance of compassion and the need to balance individual achievement with social responsibility. Furthermore, Melville's portrayal of Bartleby underscores the theme of isolation in a rapidly industrializing society.
