Philip Freneau was viewed as a failure, even though he was considered to be an accomplished journalist. He was assumed to be a failure since he was unable to support himself as a writer. He contributed to the American identity but sharing what he thought was right and giving his insight on what he has seen throughout his life. His work The Indian Burying Ground was written to challenge the European-American customs. He contributed to the addition to the American identity by exploring the world around him. The introduction stated "Raised in Manhattan, Freneau had all the advantages of wealth and social position, which included an early introduction to the arts"(Freneau,395). He was raised with everything, and chose to live with and explore the cultures that he considered to have less than him so he could understand how they lived and how their culture and dynamic came to be.
