11 abr 1780 ano - Charles Brockden Brown: Somnambulism

Descrição:

Charles Brockden Brown wrote Somnambulism which was a gothic tale. At this point in history writing of things so dark and gloomy wasn't common, writing anything to do with the devil was a no go. The constant gloom throughout the piece was obvious, using wording to help the reader feel what they were reading and interject themselves into the story. The passage "Her vows are binding on condition that the present situation continues, and that another does not arise, previously to marriage, by whose claims those of the present lover will be justly superseded"(Brown, 413). This quote clearly shows a sense of being trapped, drawing the readers in. I think it was relatable or the readers as well feeling trapped in where they are. This tale contributed to the formation of the American identity by expose. It gave people an option to read a different kind of writing style most of them might not be used to yet, and paved the way for other writers to do the same.
