After Harvey Milk won a seat on the San Francisco Board of Supervisors, he introduced an ordinance protecting gay and lesbian individuals from being fired from their jobs. Notably, Milk also campaigned successfully against California's Proposition 6, which proposed forbidding LGBTQIA+ teachers.

One year after he was elected, Harvey Milk was assassinated by former city supervisor Dan White.
