Nicene Christianity became the official religion of the Roman Empire when Emperor Theodosius I issued the Edict of Thessalonica. This decree declared Christianity, specifically Nicene Christianity, as the state religion and required all subjects of the empire to follow it. The Nicene Creed, established at the Council of Nicaea affirmed the doctrine of the Trinity, declaring that the Father, Son, and Holy Spirit were of the same substance. The edict marked the end of pagan state religion and the beginning of Christianity's dominance in the Roman Empire.
