Consort Shu (Wenxiu) and the Xuantong Emperor (Puyi) were married in 1922 as part of his arranged imperial household, though their marriage was at times distant and lacking affection. Wenxiu eventually grew discontented with the lack of personal connection and the restrictive nature of life in Puyi's household, leading her to make the unprecedented decision to divorce him in 1931. This act of defiance marked her as one of the first women in Chinese imperial history to leave an emperor through divorce, highlighting her desire for independence and a new life outside the imperial shadow.
