In 1846, the Armstrong Academy opened, the second boarding school to operate for American Indian children. These boarding schools operated as a function of institutional racism and played a vital role in the deculturalization of the American Indians. The act of taking away these small children from a very early age was that they would forget their native language and culture and only participate in the American ways that were taught at this boarding school and many others that operated during this period in history.
