8 jan 1766 ano - 1766 - The Stamp Act REVOKED
Descrição:
It’s important to remember that most policies and taxes that were passed after 1763 (Treaty of Paris) angered American colonists as they threatened some of the key core values in the colonies, such as self-government, religious freedom, economic growth and territorial expansion.
These acts were attacking the rights of the American colonists therefore, they started to refer to themselves as the Whigs and call the British government the Tories. They attempted to draw a parallel situation to that one in which Britain had these two opposing parties; the Whigs who supported the Parliament as the representative of the people, and the Tories, who were strong supporters of the traditional absolute power of the monarchy.
Of course the Stamp Act was not well received which led to massive protests that were using the slogan “No taxation without representation.” A specific group of people called The Sons of Liberty led public protests which were so massive, stamp agents were forced to resign therefore, revoking the Stamp Act all together.
In 1766, Prime Minister George Grenville was replaced and his successor, Lord Rockingham, revoked the Stamp Act.
However, even though the Stamp Act was revoked, the Parliament passed the Declaratory Act, which established that the Parliament could passed any laws “in all cases, whatsoever” which of course triggered further conflict.
