3 jan 1765 ano - 1765 - The Stamp Act
Descrição:
George Grenville, who was the Prime Minister of Britain at the time, made one wrong decision after another; one of these was the passing of the Stamp Act.
The Stamp Act was a law passed to make all colonists purchase revenue stamps which needed to be put in any form of printed material in the colonies, such as newspapers, legal documents (contracts, deeds), and even playing cards. This way, colonists could legally use these documents as the stamp would be a proof that they had been taxed. The money used to buy the stamps was the tax itself.
Of course, colonists felt this was a violation of their rights, since this was an internal tax, directly imposed upon colonists, without asking for their input or representation in Parliament. And colonists were strong believers of the principle “no taxation without representation.”
Around the same time the Stamp Act was passed, the Quartering Act was also introduced, or rather imposed; this act required colonists to house and feed British troops, even at peaceful times. So this of course led colonists to believe this was also a way to impose unfair taxes.
