Oliver Cromwell, who as a member of the Parliament Army, took over the throne as Lord Protector. Since there was no King, and everything was ruled by a Parliamentary Army, they called this republic the Commonwealth. He was a puritan so his reign was a rather strict, moral and oppressive one.
