In 1488, Portuguese explorer Bartolomeu Dias made a historic discovery by rounding the southern tip of Africa, initially named "Cabo das Tormentas" (Cape of Storms). This name reflected the perilous, stormy seas he encountered during his journey. Dias' expedition was part of Portugal's efforts to find a sea route to India, bypassing the costly overland trade routes controlled by Middle Eastern powers. Upon Dias’ return, King John II of Portugal renamed the cape to "Cabo da Boa Esperança" (Cape of Good Hope), emphasizing its significance as a hopeful gateway to the Indian Ocean and the riches of Asia.
