The Treaty of Alcáçovas-Toledo marked a significant turning point in the rivalry between Portugal and Castile over overseas territories. In exchange, Castile acknowledged Portugal's sovereignty over territories discovered south of the islands. The treaty laid the groundwork for later agreements, such as the Treaty of Tordesillas in 1494.
