The Egypt Rebellion of 984 made Rome lost control on most of Egypt which they still had in late 983, at this situation, Alexandria being sieged again, the first time after 721. However, Nikephoros II still tried to raise an army, and fight with Raphael. While led the main army to Alexandria, he prepared another side army to attack the supplyline of Raphael, and forced him to retreat.
