15 fev 1968 ano - The founding of the PLF
Descrição:
The Palestinian Liberation Front (PLF; Arabic: جبهة التحرير الفلسطينية) is a Palestinian political faction known for its involvement in terrorism. Designated a terrorist organization by the United States since 1997, Canada since 2003, and banned in Japan, the PLF has been responsible for several high-profile attacks.
Terrorist Activities:
Achille Lauro Hijacking (1985): The PLF hijacked the Italian cruise ship MS Achille Lauro on October 7, 1985. Initially aiming to reach Israel, the hijackers instead seized control of the ship, leading to the murder of an elderly American Jewish passenger, Leon Klinghoffer. US fighter jets forced the hijackers' plane to land in Sicily, but the Italians released their leader, Abu Abbas, who was later sentenced to life in absentia by Italy. Abbas subsequently moved his headquarters to Baghdad, Iraq.
1990 Beach Raid: In May 1990, the PLF attacked Israel’s Nizanim beach near Tel Aviv, with the goal of derailing peace negotiations between the PLO and Israel. Although the attack did not achieve its intended outcome, it led to significant fallout, including the US withdrawing from Palestinian dialogue and internal criticism within the PLO.
Recent Years:
Following the PLO's 1993 Oslo Accords, which the PLF opposed, Abu Abbas claimed to renounce terrorism and recognize Israel's right to exist. Despite maintaining a presence in Palestinian territories, Lebanon, and Iraq, the PLF's activities have significantly declined. In November 2001, Israeli authorities arrested 15 PLF members who were planning attacks in Israel. Abu Abbas was captured by US forces in April 2003 and died in custody in March 2004.
