1 fev 1448 ano - St. Mark the Evangelist Mantegna

Descrição:

- One of the earliest works by Mantegna
- As in the Santa Sofia altarpiece (which is lost), Mantegna signed his work in calligraphic
writing inspired by antiquity, applied to a piece of parchment that seems to have been glued
onto the marble parapet in the painting itself
- Figure leaning out of the frame, leaving the parapetto → the elbow and also the book → the
way they are placed suggests spatial depth
- ↳This is related to flemish art - Van Eyck por exemplo - spatial depth Flemish idea with the
foreshortening objects and use of light to underline texture and details. Idea of cartiglio (piece
of paper scroll) just like the inscriptions of Van Eyck
- ↳ This piece of paper attached to the marble has a tactile essence → ingannare l’occhio →
Van Eyck
- Motif of the garland → striking quality in the mimetic rendering of the fruit → flemish
influence
- Incredibly rich in details, e.g. pearls
- Three dimensional halo
- We see the use of light in his face that emphasizes the volume
- Very accurate description of the details
- We see the type of pictorial illusion influenced by flemish art
- In terms of compostion and architecture → very close dialogue with Donatello
- ↳ By a follower of Donatello, Madonna and Child within an Arch: the arch resembles the arch
used by Mantegna so perhaps there was an original Donatello that inspired those kinds of
compositions
