Loki shaved the golden hair off of Brunnhilde's head in an attempt to impress Sif. Brunnhilde's horror angers Thor, who insists that Loki fix what he's done. He takes Thor to Nidavellir, to the sons of the master forger Ivaldi. Loki sweet talks them into creating a beautiful wig of finely folded gold to replace her lost locks.

The sons of Ivaldi then brag that they crafted such a work of beauty for the Aesir. Ivaldi travels to Asgard and confronts Odin about his sons being taken advantage of. Odin says he'll pay Ivaldi for the work, but says this is an opportunity to teach their children a lesson. He commissions the construction of a weapon, a hammer, that is rivaled only by Odin's own Gungnir. It will be enchanted to be wielded only by they who are worthy of such a weapon. He brings his five sons, along with Sif and Brunnhilde to present the weapon to the worthiest among them. None are able to lift the hammer, and so Odin sets it in his hall, waiting for one of his house to prove themselves.

Afterwards, Odin gifts Thor the Dwarven-forged axe Jarnbjorn.
